With the closure of the window to register as a candidate for the upcoming presidential election, it is clear that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will not face any real challenge to his reelection. Moussa Mustafa Moussa, an ardent Sisi supporter who had been campaigning for his reelection as recently as last week, will be the only other candidate in the election. All other potential candidates have been either disqualified, coerced into withdrawing their candidacy, or have suspended their campaign after concluding that the election will not meet even the most minimal standards of fairness. POMED’s newest fact sheet, “Dropping Like Flies: Sisi’s Purge of Potential Candidates in Egypt’s 2018 Presidential ‘Election,’” looks at the fate of those who expressed an interest in running against Sisi.
