Sharan Grewal

Nonresident Senior Fellow

Sharan Grewal is an Assistant Professor of Government at the College of William & Mary and a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution. He received a PhD in Politics from Princeton University in 2018. His research examines democratization, security studies, and political Islam in the Arab world, especially Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria. Sharan’s work has been published in top academic journals like the American Political Science Review and the American Journal of Political Science, as well as policy outlets like Foreign Policy, Washington Post, Brookings, and Carnegie. His first book, Soldiers of Democracy? Military Legacies and the Arab Spring, is forthcoming with Oxford University Press in 2023. Sharan has been interviewed by a number of media outlets, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, AFP, and Reuters, among others.
