Justin Shilad is a human rights advocate and researcher. He was previously senior researcher for Middle East and North Africa at the Committee to Protect Journalists for six years, where he covered press freedom throughout the region, and he also worked as research and advocacy lead at PEN America, where he developed advocacy strategies for the Middle East, Southeast Asia and elsewhere. His work has focused on the intersection of free expression and broader human rights issues, the impact of U.S. foreign policy on press freedom, accountability for attacks against journalists, and assistance for displaced journalists and writers, among other issues. He received his B.A. in International Studies and Literature from American University and his M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University.
