On Thursday, March 1st, POMED hosted its 4th annual Leaders for Democracy awards reception in Washington, D.C.  The historic uprisings that began in 2011 and continue today highlight the inherent instability of authoritarian regimes in the Middle East and North Africa and the importance of POMED’s work to support democratic reform across the region.

The POMED annual awards reception is a special gathering that brings together POMED staff, friends, and supporters.  It was a wonderful opportunity to look back on the exciting events of the past year and look forward to all the things we can accomplish together in 2012.

Each year, we honor individuals who exemplify the goals and principles that inspire our work, and we look ahead toward the year to come. In 2012, we were very excited to honor three individuals whose public service, activism, and commitment to advancing democratic values have inspired us:

Omezzine Khelifa
Tunisian civil society activist and former candidate for Tunisia’s National Constituent Assembly (Ettakatol)

Matar Ebrahim Matar
Former Member of the Bahraini Parliament (Al-Wefaq)

Ambassador Robert Ford
U.S. Ambassador to Syria

Our 2012 reception also featured artwork inspired by the uprisings of the past year and a silent auction of those and other items.
