Countering Authoritarianism

The Countering Authoritarianism hub exposes and counters authoritarian tactics, trends, and narratives of governments and their enablers in the MENA region. We engage with experts to identify the most consequential authoritarian trends in the region – such as corruption and transnational kleptocracy; interconnected systems of domestic and transnational repression; and the misuse of a wide range of technological and digital tools – to identify actionable policies for the United States to counter such trends. We expose authoritarian narratives like the idea of “liberalizing or benevolent autocracy” or “authoritarian stability.”
