On the International Day of Democracy, the Middle East Democracy Center (MEDC) reaffirms its commitment to the democratic governance, self determination, and universal human rights of all people in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Amid the war on Gaza, threats of greater regional conflict, consequential elections, and continued authoritarian entrenchment, the pursuit of democracy is not only a force for political change but a necessity for millions who aspire to a better future.
MEDC’s flagship program, the Democracy Matters Initiative, is remaking the case for democracy, leveraging its eight-member Advisory Group to build democratic narratives and foster robust pro-democracy networks across the MENA region. The Advisory Group boldly confronts the complex relationship between democratic norms, elite power structures, conservative religious doctrine, and economic inequality.
MEDC stands in solidarity with democracy defenders across the MENA region and the diaspora, and it urges U.S. policymakers, international bodies, and regional governments to prioritize the protection of democratic norms and institutions. We call for an environment where civil society can thrive, young and diverse voices are heard, and every individual can contribute to the democratic fabric of their society.
The International Day of Democracy is an opportunity to come together and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of democracy’s role in enhancing human dignity, peace, and prosperity. Through dialogue, action, and unyielding advocacy, we endeavor to play a small part in paving the way for a more democratic, inclusive, and peaceful MENA region.
