The Freedom Initiative was a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that worked to free the unjustly detained in the Middle East and North Africa.
The Freedom Initiative was founded in 2016 by former political prisoner Mohamed Soltan and group of committed human rights advocates to carry on the spirit of the successful #FreeSoltan campaign to advocate on behalf of the unjustly detained in the Middle East and North Africa. Over the following 7 years, the Freedom Initiative stood as a beacon of hope for many, facilitating the release of countless wrongfully detained individuals.
In 2024, the Freedom Initiative merged with the Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED) to form the Middle East Democracy Center (MEDC).
